About

Kai Hirota Magee (he/him) is a Chief Lighting Technician (Gaffer) and Lighting Designer based in Los Angeles.

Kai is passionate about using lighting as a tool for storytelling, and working collaboratively with other artists. Clear communication, respect, and creativity are central to his work as an artist and technician.

After spending the first part of his career in Chicago, he currently works as a freelance CLT, SLT, and LCP in Los Angeles, and aspires to eventually join IATSE local 728. Kai received his BA in Theater from Wesleyan University.

Kai is Japanese, and was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. He is also a transgender man, and cares deeply for his fellow LGBT+ artists. When Kai is not playing with lights, he enjoys making Japanese food at home and taking care of his cat, Artemis.
